You can also become a backer and supporter of the film at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1750734787/the-surrounding-game-a-documentary-film. Each donation comes with a variety of great rewards, from a stone and game record of one of the first ever American Go professional qualification tournaments, to a signed go board by Cho Hunhyun! They reached their first goal, $15,000, in six days, and are now working to hit their second goal, $25,000, to help them film on-location in China and Korea.
The directors of The Surrounding Game emailed the Milwaukee Go Club directly, and their letter can be read below:
“Dear Go Club leader,
We want to tell you about a project that we believe has the potential to share Go with thousands of people and excite the worldwide Go community.
We’re Will Lockhart and Cole Pruitt, and we’re directing “The Surrounding Game”, an upcoming documentary on all aspects of the world of Go. After witnessing the challenge of bringing Go to public awareness and the longtime frustration of the community’s most dedicated organizers, we embarked on this ambitious project as a new way to share the beauty of Go with a diverse audience. Our dream is that this film will provide the general public a real chance to explore firsthand how incredible Go is.
We started filming several months ago and have received overwhelming support from both the film and Go communities. Last week, we launched a crowd-funding campaign through Kickstarter and were thrilled and humbled to reach our $15,000 goal in only six days. While we’ll be filming at the US Go Congress, Pro certification tournament, and International Go Symposium, we’ll also be traveling to China and Korea to film international title tournaments and the cultural legacy of Go in Asia. We want you to know that this isn’t just a ‘promotional film’ – it’s about the narrative of Go, the people it inspires, and the unique place that Go has among cultures and communities.
Even more important, we feel that this year is a golden opportunity for the American Go community to make strides in popularizing Go. Right now, we’re contacting every Go club in America. We want to know: if you had one chance to tell everyone what Go means to you, what would you say? We’re asking for your help in promoting Go in every way possible, whether it’s through word-of-mouth, teaching Go in your community, meeting and getting stronger with other Go players, or by supporting our documentary project. If we can reach critical mass, the American Go community can have a major impact on public awareness of the world’s greatest game.
We hope you share our passion and want to help make this push possible. We’re extremely grateful to the dedicated Go players who continue to tirelessly promote Go and we’re excited to see what lies ahead for Go in the US! For more information about our project, you can visit our website at http://www.surroundinggamemovie.com or go to our Kickstarter to become a backer and support the film. Thanks for being a Go promoter – we know that, with a united effort, we can make a real difference.
